Today’s Reading: Mark 13:1-13
As the disciples’ conversation with Jesus prove, the intrigue surrounding the end times has always been high. It is almost impossible to go one day without hearing references to these times on the news, see it on social media, or hear it in conversation with friends or coworkers. As Jesus makes quite obvious, the timing of these events should not be of utmost concern to us. However, we should be aware of what to expect. Here are some things that Jesus instructs us to expect and prepare for.
Watch out for deceivers: As the time gets closer to Jesus’ return there will be deceivers who will claim to have the answer to all of the world’s problems. These deceivers will vary as they may come in the form of political, intellectual, social, or even spiritual leaders. It is important for us to be aware of these deceivers and listen closely to their message so that we do not fall prey to their ideas.
Be on your guard: We must remain vigilant to what is happening around us and prepare for the hardship that will come. The reason why we need to be vigilant is so that in every situation we find ourselves in we make sure that, “the gospel is preached.” It is important for us not to dwell on the hardships that will come, but to look at these hardships as opportunities for God’s message to be proclaimed.
Be willing to stand firm in the midst of persecution: The final words of Jesus are quite clear. “…but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.” As followers of Christ, we must prepare ourselves and be willing to stand firm regardless of the cost. The life of faith may not be safe, but it comes with incredible rewards should we be willing to stand firm until the end.
